What You Need to Know About Surrogacy

When embarking on your surrogacy journey, it’s natural to feel a sense of overwhelm. Fortunately, we’re here to guide you through every step of the process. We understand that there are many questions and uncertainties that arise during the initial stages of surrogacy, and we want to assure you that we will provide you with the information and support you need. Our goal is to make your surrogacy experience as smooth and stress-free as possible. So, we’ve compiled the most common questions that our clients have during this exciting time.

Guided Surrogacy Solutions works with all types of couples and individuals who wish to become parents. We do not discriminate against age, ethnic background, marital status or sexual orientation. It is required to have a consent from an IVF clinic to pursue surrogacy.

The surrogacy journey, from initially partnering with our agency to the joyous delivery of the baby, typically spans 18 to 24 months. This timeframe accounts for various stages, including the matching process, medical evaluations, legal proceedings, and the pregnancy itself. While each surrogacy experience is unique, this is the average timeframe.

Determining the cost of surrogacy involves various factors tailored to individual circumstances. For a personalized estimate, we recommend using our Surrogacy Finance Calculator, which takes into account specific preferences and requirements. This tool provides a transparent breakdown of potential expenses, ensuring a clear understanding of the financial aspects of your surrogacy journey. Explore the calculator to receive a detailed cost estimate based on your unique surrogacy experience.

Our highly experienced team of surrogates and intended parents have the necessary training and knowledge to assist you with every aspect of your journey, from the initial consultation to delivery and beyond. When choosing a surrogate, there are several important factors that need to be taken into account. These factors include the quality and number of embryos that will be transferred (to be discussed with your fertility clinic), the possibility of selective reduction, vaccinations, religious beliefs, location, health insurance, compensation requirements, and relationship expectations. It’s important to carefully consider each of these factors before making a decision.

As part of our 5 step surrogate pre-screening process, we will have her insurance reviewed to determine if it is surrogacy friendly. In addition to reviewing and potentially purchasing health insurance for your surrogate, we will help to coordinate services with insurance brokers who focus on third party reproduction to help determine the best insurance plans to protect all parties during the surrogacy journey.

Our team will help you coordinate with a trusted attorney who specializes in third-party reproduction. This is to ensure that all parties involved in the surrogacy journey are protected. Legal clearance will cover various aspects, including compensation, health insurance, termination beliefs, healthcare providers, the number of embryos to transfer, and the number of IVF cycles.

As part of managing your expenses during the surrogacy journey, you will be required to fund an escrow account to reimburse the gestational carrier for her base compensation, medical expenses, missed time from work, etc. You are required to fund the escrow account with $5,000 prior to the medical screening appointment. Upon contract execution, you are required to fund the escrow account with the gestational carrier’s base compensation and an additional $20,000, with a minimum balance of $5,000 until six months post delivery.

We proudly collaborate with a network of esteemed IVF clinics across the United States, including reputable institutions such as Shady Grove, RMA, CCRM, UPMC, and AHN. Our commitment to expanding accessibility means we are always open to establishing partnerships with new clinics. If you have a specific clinic in mind or would like to recommend one, feel free to reach out to us.

Gestational Carriers will travel approximately two times to the Intended Parent’s Fertility Clinic. Once for the Medical Screening and another for the Embryo Transfer. If they live within commuting distance of the clinic, they will also travel there for lab work and ultrasounds up to 12 weeks of pregnancy. If they do not live within easy commuting distance to the Fertility Clinic, arrangements will be made to have your lab work and ultrasounds monitored at a fertility clinic closer to their home.

Intended Parents enjoy attending visits, especially milestones, such as heartbeat confirmation and 20 week growth scan, and birth of baby. Depending upon the location of the surrogate in relation to the intended parents, some will attend more visits than others. In some instances, technology as FaceTime and Zoom have helped Intended Parents to attend virtually when restrictions were in place.

Our agency follows the recommendations from SART (Society of Assisted Reproductive Technologies) which recommends the transfer of a single PGT tested embryo to a surrogate. We do not work with couples who wish to have a double embryo transfer.
